ATLAS DEVELOPMENT
CORP. INTRODUCES TOTAL OUTREACH MANAGEMENT
Designed To Improve Efficiency, Customer Service, Patient Care
At Nation’s Clinical Laboratories
LOS ANGELES, CA, Nov. 12, 2003– Atlas Development Corporation
today announced a next generation approach to clinical connectivity for hospital
and independent clinical laboratories that the company said “will significantly
improve service while increasing efficiency and enhancing the lab’s
relationship with the physician and patient customer.”
Robert D. Atlas, chief executive officer of Atlas, a privately held software
company, said “Total Outreach Management” drew exceptionally
strong interest from healthcare industry executives who received a preview
recently.
Atlas asked the preview audience to think boldly about improving organizational
efficiency. “What would it mean to your lab if you could eliminate
95% of all manual entries into laboratory information (LIS) and billing systems,
and reduce customer service and billing costs by 50 percent?” He asked.
While IT by itself might not have all the answers, Atlas stated his strong
belief that a strategic business-driven approach to IT and the deployment
of integrated IT solutions targeted at improving the lab outreach process
would
enable the lab to reach these goals.
The Atlas CEO stated his commitment to developing solutions that will enable
hospital and independent labs to compete effectively with the majors in the
field. “This is the design vision behind Total Outreach Management,” Atlas
added: “A comprehensive solution to business agility for the lab.”
Describing the impact of technology on the clinical lab industry, Atlas noted
that the industry has encountered many challenges over the years, including
changes in regulation, industry consolidation, and competitive pressures
and shifting reimbursement standards. More than ever before, the current
challenges
in the market, he said, require business agility.
“Our vision for a Total Outreach Management architecture focuses on
enabling clinical laboratories to more effectively meet these challenges
and achieve new levels of operational excellence,” Atlas said.
Total Outreach Management is a suite of products and services designed to
provide labs with much needed operational support in managing relationships
with the provider community. At its core, the system relies on a robust communications
infrastructure that links the physician’s office with the central lab’s
LIS. The foundation of this system is the Atlas LabWorks order entry and
results reporting system now used by more than thirty national and regional
reference labs and hospital outreach programs.
“Though we first deployed Atlas LabWorks in 1996, our central server
architecture anticipated the advancements in distributed computing that began
to take hold as use of the Internet exploded in the late 1990’s,” Rob
Atlas observed. “Our system was built to enable direct communication
between the lab and the ordering sites in the field. Total Outreach Management
takes this infrastructure and expands on it to support a whole range of functionality
that no other clinical connectivity system can provide.”
In addition to facilitating clinical and pathology lab and radiology order
entry and results reporting, TOM offers support for flow-through accessioning,
order specimen triage to multiple labs, practice management and EMR interfacing,
billing and claims scrubbing, billing exception reporting and resolution,
clinical and operational alerts, customer relationship management, courier
management and a host of other functions that are critical to the relationship
between the outreach lab and the physician’s office.
In the coming months, Atlas will be unveiling product enhancements and new
modules designed to address the spectrum of lab outreach management needs. “Atlas
is the only IT vendor with the deep technical expertise and operational understanding
to offer a credible solution to these problems,” said Atlas.
“I started working in the lab as a courier more than twenty years ago.
After graduating from MIT, my first job was as a software engineer where
I developed a custom LIS. Later in my career, I leveraged my experience in
the lab to found Atlas.
“Given my experience and Atlas’s heritage, I can categorically
make the claim that we understand the current day needs of lab operations
in a way that no other vendor can,” Atlas observed. “Our view
is that information technology is a weapon that makes the lab more competitive,
and TOM is the ultimate weapon.”
