Medscape
Announces Agreement With
Atlas to Integrate Lab
Ordering Software With
EMR
HILLSBORO, ORE. (BUSINESS
WIRE) – Nov. 27,
2001 – Medscape
(NASDAQ: MDLI - news),
a leading provider of
digital health records
and online health information,
today announced an agreement
with Atlas Development
Corporation that will
enable complete automation
of the laboratory ordering
process–from the
point-of-care in the doctor's
office to the laboratory--through
integration of Atlas's
industry-leading Atlas
LabWorks™ software
solution into Medscape's
Logician® electronic
medical record (EMR) system.
Now, clean and complete
laboratory orders will
be sent electronically
to laboratories from a
product that has been
integrated into the workflow
tools used every day by
health care providers.
Most existing laboratory
order software programs
are focused applications
used by nurses or phlebotomists
specifically for the ordering
and management of laboratory
services. This agreement
represents the first time
a best-of-breed laboratory
orders module will be
integrated with a best-of-breed
EMR, for total integration
of lab orders/results
with other critical clinical
data such as medications,
diagnoses and procedures.
This unique blend of technology
will ensure that laboratories
receive complete electronic
laboratory orders that
have already been verified
for medical necessity,
through a system that
integrates seamlessly
with the health care provider's
existing Medscape EMR
systems. The Atlas LabWorks
software is specifically
aimed at laboratories,
reducing the thousands
of dollars in write-offs–or
"uncollectable billing"–that
they face when processing
requests for diagnostic
tests that may not qualify
as medically necessary
under local Medicare or
other insurance reimbursement
policies. Integration
with the EMR system also
means the solution will
become a natural part
of the care provider's
workflow.
"We welcome the opportunity
to be the first company
to integrate a best-of-class
lab order entry and results
reporting solution with
a well-established EMR
system," said Robert
Atlas, president and chief
executive officer at Atlas.
"This marriage of
our system with the leading
EMR provides laboratories–both
independent ones and those
that are part of hospitals
or IDNs–with a powerful
means of incorporating
electronic ordering and
results reporting into
the care provider's workflow.
Atlas LabWorks permits
direct communication between
health care providers
and laboratories and allows
providers to efficiently
and accurately create
laboratory orders and
requisition slips, print
shipping manifests and
access important test
information. Under the
agreement, this software
will now integrate with
Logician.
"Atlas LabWorks already
provides us with clean
and complete lab orders
from clients using it
as a stand-alone system,
which has proven very
successful for us,"
said Steve Ho, chief information
officer and senior vice
president of Dynacare
Laboratories. "Combining
the Atlas solution with
a clinic-centric EMR system
will allow us to provide
order entry that is closely
integrated with the workflow
of many clients, particularly
larger clinics. That should
ensure wider adoption
of electronic ordering,
which will make us even
more efficient and responsive
to the needs of our customers."
Both the Atlas and the
Dynacare relationships
will provide additional
benefits to physicians
following the next release
of Medscape's Chart Room
Services, coming soon.
Chart Room Services is
a suite of Web-based services
that allows physicians
to receive lab results,
send/receive referrals,
and create, store and
exchange electronic records
and clinical information
in a protected environment.
Chart Room Services will
have a messaging functionality
that enables Chart Room
Services users and Logician
users to send each other
referrals, patient chart
summaries and documents
such as laboratory reports
and receive consult reports
and related documentation
back.
"At Medscape, we
are constantly improving
our core digital health
record solutions, through
ongoing development as
well as through strategic
partnerships," said
Mark Leavitt, MD, PhD,
chairman of Medscape.
"We have the opportunity
here to save time for
clinicians while reducing
the possibility for error–and
that is good for patients."
